MALEVICH MARLBORO | ALEXANDER KOSOLAPOV OR ANGEL OF CHOLESTEROL
At the height of the Cold War, artist Alexander Kosolapov developed an approach to reappropriation and diversion, combining symbols from Soviet political propaganda with American commercial advertising. The idealization of the masses is at work in both of those domains – for its purchasing power in the West and its productive power in the East. The misappropriation of religious symbols and major figures from western art history also enters into his practice, forming the structure of ideological systems that question him and make him react. Alexander Kosolapov was one of the first to perform that kind of operation, which has since been taken up by many other artists and even by advertising...

NO VALUE. APPROVED FOR EXPORT.
The famous contemporary painters living in Paris. Beyond the rhythm of the crowded city, they created the reality of their own freedom, without boundaries. Their strength of energy and depth of wisdom are shaped with their characters through the texture of art. The surrealism of Soviet Union reality is transformed into the paintings of Eric Boulatov, Oscar Rabine and other representatives of generations of artistic dissidence… Their works are priceless today but only a short time ago the work of these non-conformist artists was exiled from the Soviet union with a stamp : “ Approved for export from the USSR. Art of no value”.
